Two facing peacocks, hand-stitched in soft ocean-mint silk on ivory linen. The mint is cool and pale rather than tropical, which is what keeps a motif this ornamental from tipping into fussy. It reads almost as a watermark from a distance and resolves into detail up close.

The embroidery

Silk thread on linen, worked by hand. Silk takes dye differently from cotton and holds a faint sheen, so the mint shifts between pale green and pale blue depending on the light in the room. The tail feathers are the most worked section — dozens of short stitches building the fan, which is where the raised texture comes from.

Living with it

This is the coastal, quiet one. It belongs on pale linen, white or soft grey upholstery, and in bedrooms more than formal sitting rooms. Its sibling in burnt orange is the loud version if you want more contrast.

Care

Dry clean only. Do not machine wash — silk embroidery on linen will pucker. Press from the reverse on a low setting, never directly over the stitching. Keep out of long direct sun; ivory linen yellows and silk dyes fade.
