Deep black velvet with an ornate medallion hand-stitched in antique gold. Velvet absorbs light and metallic thread throws it back, so the pattern appears to sit above the surface rather than on it. The most dramatic piece in the range, and the easiest to overdo — one is usually enough.

The embroidery
Embroidering metal thread onto velvet is awkward work: the pile shifts under the needle and the thread is stiff and inclined to catch. Done by hand it produces a raised, slightly irregular line that reads as craft. Done by machine it looks printed. This is the former.
Living with it
Best against colour rather than more black — deep olive, forest green, oxblood or a mid-grey sofa all give the gold something to lift against. On a black sofa it disappears.
Care
Dry clean only. Do not machine wash. Never iron over the embroidery. Brush the pile gently in one direction to keep it even, and store flat rather than folded across the stitched medallion.
