The embroidery

Worked stitch by stitch onto woven linen rather than machine-applied. Metallic thread is difficult to embroider — it is stiffer than silk and catches — which is why hand-worked gold has a slightly uneven, living quality that machine embroidery flattens out.

Living with it

Warm and quite formal. It sits well on cream, camel or deep green upholstery and next to brass or aged wood. In a cool, minimal room it will look like a deliberate accent rather than a blend-in.

Care

Dry clean only. Do not machine wash — metallic thread will snag and dull. Never iron directly over the embroidery; press from the reverse on a low setting if needed. Store flat rather than folded along the stitched area.
